Sunderland’s development squad ran out comfortable winners in a friendly against Hull City at the Academy of Light on Tuesday afternoon.

The game pitted Kevin Ball against former coaching colleague Stephen Clemence, now in charge of City’s second string.

The hosts raced into a two-goal lead through first-half strikes from a trialist and frontman Jordan Laidler.

The Tigers pulled a goal back from the penalty spot early in the second period, but Sunderland were always in control and restored their two-goal cushion through Blair Adams.

The hosts asserted their authority from the off and took the lead just before the quarter-hour following good work from Adam Reed.

The Sunderland captain controlled a ball into feet and spun away from his marker before crossing for the trialist to convert at the back post.

Ball’s side continued to press and fashioned a second goal on 29 minutes.

The trialist’s cross fell to Laidler at the front post and the striker slid the ball home from a narrow angle despite being paid close attention by defender Conor Townsend.

Alex Gorrin saw a long-range blast saved by keeper Eldin Jakupovic as the hosts made a strong finish to the half.

However, Hull were back in it seven minutes after the restart against the run of play. Connor Oliver fouled Jamie Devitt and he got up to send Jordan Pickford the wrong way from the spot.

Clemence’s side couldn’t make their opponents pay, though, with Reed coming close at the other end with a rising drive which flashed just wide.

And the Black Cats roared back to net the decisive third goal with 24 minutes to play.

Adam Mitchell’s cross was touched on as far as Adams at the back post, and the defender let fly with a well-struck volley which cannoned off the inside of the upright before spinning over the line.

Sunderland almost added a fourth goal late on through Craig Lynch, who saw an effort from the edge of the box deflected just past the post.

Sunderland: Pickford (Dixon, 79), Marrs, Adams, Oliver, Egan (Ferguson, 62), Gorrin (Armstrong, 62), Reed, Mitchell, Trialist (Deacon, 62), Laidler (Joyce, 66), Lynch.
