Egan boosted by win

Defender reflects on Stoke victory.

John Egan scored the winner in the under-21s‘ first win of the season at the Britannia Stadium earlier this week.

The defender nabbed the only goal of the game midway through the first half to extend Kevin Ball’s side’s unbeaten run and seal their first three points of the campaign.

Following the game, Egan told ”The result against Stoke was a great one for us.

“I scored my first goal, we won and we kept a clean sheet – you can’t ask for much more than that.”

Prior to the trip to Staffordshire , Sunderland had drawn their previous three games and were seeking that illustrious first win of the campaign.

“The team were all delighted to get the win - the goal for me was just a bonus.” Egan continued.

“We played really well and created loads of chances, we could have maybe won two or three nil.”

The Irishman is the fifth scorer for the under-21s this season, but believes he was just in the right place at the right time to drill home the winner.

“I was in the box after a corner and the move broke down but I just stayed up there to try my luck.

“The ball fell to Jordan Laidler, who cut in and squared it across and I just booted it first time and in it went in the bottom corner – I was lucky.”

Egan added: “It’s a big boost to get the win – it’s been long overdue.”
