We preview Saturday's Wear-Tyne derby.

Craig Liddle is hoping Sunderland’s under-18s can make it a successful trip to Tyneside in Saturday’s Wear-Tyne derby.

The Black Cats face Newcastle at Longbenton (KO 11am) looking for a victory which could pull them to within three points of second-placed Manchester United with a game in hand.

Sunderland grabbed a victory in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season, winning 4-2 at the Academy of Light, and Liddle says a similar performance would be ideal.

“I think looking back to September [the previous derby match] the result and the performance was what we wanted,” he said.

“The lads are really looking forward to it – we try to play it down a little bit but they know that it is an important game for themselves and the football club.

“As far as the game and the result goes - the same as last time would be the perfect scenario for us.”

The Black Cats have won four and lost four of their eight games so far and secured a fine 3-1 home win over Aston Villa last time out.

“The second half against Aston Villa was probably our best performance of the season,” Liddle added.

“We played some really good stuff. We defended well and we were a real threat going forwards.

“We’re pleased with the build up this week – we’ve had a real good performance and training week ahead of a big game for the boys.

“We conceded the first goal and the lads showed great character after conceding five the previous week. Once we conceded I think we limited Aston Villa to long range efforts after that which was good.”
