Sunderland played their first league game 123 years ago.

2006 – Liam Miller, Graham Kavanagh and Stephen Elliott ensured Roy Keane’s second game in charge ended in victory as Leeds United were downed 3-0 at Elland Road.

2003 – Marcus Stewart bagged an injury-time penalty to secure a 2-1 home win over Crystal Palace extending the winning sequence to four games.

1913 – Two second-half goals from James Richardson helped Sunderland to a 3-1 win at Liverpool.

1890 – Sunderland played their first league game as Burnley came to Newcastle Road; the Lads lost 3-2 to Burnley in front of nearly 5,000.
