Reidy gets top job permanently in '95.

1995 - Peter Reid became Sunderland manager on a permanent basis having originally only been handed the job until the end of the 1994-95 season.

1967 - Sunderland beat Birmingham City 2-0 on aggregate to win the FA Youth Cup, which was lifted by captain Colin Suggett.

1959 - Striker Alan Brown, whose son Chris also later played for the club, was born in Easington.

1950 - Willie Watson became the first Sunderland player to be named in an England World Cup squad. He travelled to Brazil but did not feature during the tournament.
