G-Force strike at St James' Park.

1990 - Eric Gates and Marco Gabbiadini (pictured) struck as Sunderland beat rivals Newcastle 2-0 at St James Park in the second leg of the Division Two play-offs.

1943 - Roker Park was struck by a bomb during a German air raid, leaving a crater in the middle of the pitch and destroying the clubhouse.

1942 - Cliff Whitelum scored the winner against Grimsby Town to confirm Sunderland's place in the War League Cup final.

1908 - Sunderland signed Charles Bellany Thomson, caption of the 1913 title-winning team, from Hearts for £350.
