1998 – Sunderland beat Sheffield United 3-2 on aggregate in the second leg of the Division Two play-offs.

1997 – John Mullin had the honour of scoring the last ever goal at Roker Park in an end-of-season friendly against Liverpool. The game finished 1-0.

1990 – Sunderland and Newcastle drew 0-0 in the first leg of the play-offs, with the Magpies goalkeeper, Paul Hardyman, receiving a late red card after saving a penalty.

1964 – Sunderland defender Charlie Hurley scored twice for the Republic of Ireland in a 4-1 win over Norway in Oslo.
