Arca scores stunner in away rout in '03.
30th August 2003
Sunderland thrashed Bradford at Valley Parade to record a third straight Division One win.
Mick McCarthy’s Black Cats were ruthless as they fired four goals for the fourth time in five visits to the Yorkshire club.
Defender Gary Breen headed the away side into an early lead before Marcus Stewart doubled the advantage.
Julio Arca (pictured) ran almost the full length of the pitch to make it 3-0 and Sean Thornton rounded off an excellent afternoon with a fourth goal 14 minutes from time.
Sunderland had already beaten Preston and Watford in the previous week and they surged ahead early on in front of a big travelling support.
Thornton curled in a free-kick from the left and Breen rose highest to head home.
Kevin Kilbane then supplied Stewart who produced an angled finish, but both early goals were surpassed by a moment of genius from Arca just after the half-hour.
Picking the ball up on the edge of his own area, the Argentinian cut a swathe through the home side’s ranks before chipping goalkeeper Mark Paston.
Sunderland’s fans would have gone home happy at that point but there was more to come – Thornton applying the gloss when he knocked the ball into the net after being teed up by Kevin Kyle.
