Four goals from Kevin Phillips confirmed Sunderland’s promotion to Premier League as Peter Reid’s men went on to win Division One by 18 points.
Niall Quinn also scored for the Black Cats as Bury were smashed 5-2 on their way to relegation from English football’s second tier.
Phillips gave Sunderland the lead on 11 minutes; he converted his penalty after Chris Swailes brought him down inside the area.
The Black Cats were pegged back just ten minutes later as Darren Bullock’s vicious 25-yard drive flew past Thomas Sorensen in the Sunderland goal.

Bury replied on the hour, Nick Daws thundered a volley into the top corner, leaving Sorensen, who had rarely been tested, with no chance.
