2002 – Thomas Sorensen kept earned his 16th Denmark cap as Denmark beat World Cup holders France in Incheon to set up a quarter-final showdown with England.

2000 – Niall Quinn equalled the Republic of Ireland’s goal-scoring record with his 20th international goal as the Irish beat South Africa 2-1 in New York.

1996 – Midfielder Alex Rae signed for the Black Cats from Millwall for £1million.

1953 – Scottish international goalkeeper James Cowan signed for Sunderland from Greenock Morton for £16,000.
