2004 – Michael Proctor (pictured) left the club to join Rotherham United, with striker Darren Byfield heading north in exchange.
1954 – Sunderland recorded their third straight win by beating Portsmouth 3-1 at Roker Park.
1936 – Charles Bellany Thomson, Sunderland’s captain in the 1913 FA Cup Final, died at the age of 57.
