Popular defender in the spotlight.

Defender Nedum Onuoha spent a season-long loan spell with the Black Cats during the 2010-11 campaign.

Remembered most fondly for his fine solo goal in the famous 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Onuoha made 32 appearances over the course of his ten month stay on Wearside.

The Nigerian-born defender began his career with Manchester City where he progressed through the youth ranks and made his debut as a 17-year-old in August 2004.

A steady performer throughout his time with City, Onuoha would regularly make 15 to 20 appearances during his first three seasons with the club.

He scored his first goal for City with a 72nd-minute winner in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in March 2008.

And, after making 94 appearances for City, he joined the Black Cats on a season-long loan deal ahead of the 2010-11 campaign.

He was one of six debutants in an opening day draw with Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light before he bagged his only Sunderland goal in the famous win in West London.

The England U21 international skipped past John Obi Mikel, Branislav Ivanovic and Jose Bosingwa before sliding beyond Petr Cech as Asamoah Gyan and Danny Welbeck also notched to give the Black Cats a 3-0 win.

Sunderland finished the season in tenth place and Onuoha’s consistent efforts were certainly appreciated by the Sunderland faithful.

After adding one more appearance to his City tally, Onuoha joined QPR at the beginning of the 2012-13 campaign and has since made 40 league appearances for the Hoops.

He scored his first QPR goal in the opening game of this season as the R’s beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1.
