North Stand opened whilst Clough notches on debut.

2003 – Sunderland players Kevin Kilbane, Gary Breen and Colin Healy played for Ireland against Australia in Dublin. On the same day future Black Cat Stephen Elliott scored a hat-trick for Ireland’s U21's.

2000 – The extended North Stand was used for the first time in the opening-day fixture with Arsenal. Niall Quinn scored the game’s only goal as Stan Varga and Jurgen Macho impressed.

1999 –Sunderland’s 1937 FA Cup-winning goalkeeper, John Mapson, died aged 82.

1961 – Brian Clough scored on his debut at Walsall in a 4-3 defeat. He went on to score 63 goals in 74 appearances.
