Reyna nets winner on home debut.
Sunderland 1 Everton 0
22 December 2001
Claudio Reyna grabbed the points for Sunderland on his home debut on a freezing afternoon at the Stadium of Light.
The American midfielder slid home Jason McAteer’s cross late on to give the Black Cats their first win in three.
Thomas Sorensen was called upon when Niclas Alexandersson sent in a looping header from Joe-Max Moore's cross but that was the only chance of the first-half as Sunderland struggled to penetrate the Everton back line.
Reyna looked to have blown the hosts' best opportunity after Gray played Kevin Phillips into space in the box - he cut inside before firing in a low shot which Steve Simonsen did well to parry, with Reyna hammering the rebound over the bar.
But US international Reyna snatched the winner in the 77th-minute with a low effort proving too much for Simonsen in the Everton goal.
