1991 – Sunderland notched a 4-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at Roker Park Peter Beagrie opened the scoring on the day – it was his only goal during his month-long loan from Everton.
1974 – Two second half goals from Pop Robson secured a 2-0 home win over Oxford United.
1957 – It was a baptism of fire for Charlie Hurley, who made his debut in Sunderland’s defence during a 7-0 defeat at Blackpool. The following week he was in the side that lost 6-0 at Burnley.
1946 – England and Sunderland defender Dave Watson was born in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire.
