First FA Cup home tie, win at Highbury and more.
1983 – Future Arsenal captain Tony Adams made his debut for Arsenal at Highbury but it was an unhappy start for the defender, whose side lost 2-1 to Sunderland. Colin West (pictured) and Ian Atkins were on the scoresheet for the visitors.
1966 – Sunderland ran out 4-1 winners over Sheffield United at Roker Park having been 3-0 up at half time.
1938 – Patsy Gallacher scored his 100th and final goal for Sunderland in a 3-0 win over Stoke City.
1887 – Sunderland were drawn at home in the FA Cup for the first time. The game, against Newcastle West End, ended 3-1 to the Lads after extra time.
