Tanzanian academy making progress

by Sunderland AFC

Planning application and building permit request submitted for new project.

Sunderland AFC’s ground-breaking football partnership with Tanzania, which is seeing the club lend its expertise to the creation of a football academy programme in the country, developed in conjunction with global electricity giant, Symbion Power, is starting to take shape.

SAFC will provide technical and practical support to the development of the football academy project, the first of its kind in the country. The project will see thousands of youngsters benefit from a joined up approach combining football, education and community engagement, harnessing the knowledge and expertise of Sunderland AFC and its own successful Academy.

The first phase of the development is the building of a community football facility in Dar es Salaam and the planning application and building permit request has now been submitted. It is hoped work will commence in the coming weeks.

The community-based sport park, located on the Kidongu Chekundu Ground in Dar es Salaam, will consist of a full-size 3G artificial surface, similar to that developed at Sunderland AFC’s Academy of Light training base, along with a five-a-side pitch, two sand-based pitches and a basketball court. An administration building, changing facilities and parking will also be developed.    The park will also have floodlighting to ensure the community can make best use of the facilities.

The Mayor of Ilala Municipality Mr. Jerry Silaa, met with representatives from Symbion Power to begin the formal development process. The Honourable Member of the Parliament, Mr. Mussa Zungu, Deputy Mayor & Chairman of Dar es Salaam Football Federation, representatives from the Tanzanian Football Federation, youth team football coaches and Tanzanian media were also present.

Mr. Mussa Zungu, a strong advocate for the development, opened the meeting and explained the history and purpose of the sports park. He encouraged the Mayor’s office to consider the building permit and thanked Symbion and Sunderland AFC for their participation.

The Mayor assured the group that the application will be handed over to the technical team with the message that work should commence on processing it immediately so that the permit could be issued in a week’s time. He and the Deputy Mayor gave assurances that they will personally monitor the team's work.

The group was presented with Sunderland AFC shirts by Symbion representatives and thanked for their cooperation in making the project happen.
