Superstar songstress set for Sunderland show.

Sunderland is set to welcome one of the world’s biggest music acts, as pop sensation Rihanna has confirmed she will perform at the Stadium of Light in the summer of 2013, as part of her global tour.

The star’s huge worldwide Diamonds Tour  will kick-off in North America, before heading to Europe, stopping off in Wearside on Thursday 20 June, where the spectacular show will cap off the club’s summer music calendar.

Tickets for the show will go on sale from 9am on Tuesday 20 November (details below) and demand is expected to be exceptionally high.

The 24-year old, who has sold over 25 million albums worldwide, burst onto the music scene in 2005 and has just released her seventh album, titled ‘Unapologetic’.

Sunderland AFC commercial director Gary Hutchinson said: “Rihanna is one of the most popular artists in the world at the moment so to be able to welcome her to the Sunderland is simply fantastic. We are expecting to see phenomenal demand for this show, given the artists global popularity and this could be set to be the biggest show we have ever staged here.

He continued: “It’s another great coup for the city, helping to seal our reputation as one of the biggest and best venues for live music in the country. We are also delighted to be working with Live Nation once again, the leading promoter in the world, who also brought Bruce Springsteen to the Stadium of Light last year. ”

Cllr Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council, added: "Rihanna is a global superstar, and we're thrilled to be welcoming her to Sunderland next year. A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes to bring top class events like these to our city. Our strong and successful partnership with the football club means that we can continue to work together on fantastic concerts like this one, which boost our local economy and give us a chance to showcase our city to visitors."

Vice President of Music a Live Nation, Steve Homer, said: “This is Rihanna’s biggest tour to date and we are very excited to bring the full show to the Stadium of Light, she has always enjoyed playing to her fans in the North East and this promised to be a highlight of the tour”

The support act for the Stadium of Light show will be dance music sensation David Guetta.

Rihanna has earned numerous awards and accolades during her career, including five American Music Awards, eighteen Billboard Music Awards, two BRIT Awards and five Grammy Awards. She has achieved a total of eleven number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the youngest solo artist to achieve the feat.

Stadium of Light (on sale from 9am, Tuesday 20 November:

A limited number of general admission tickets are available from the SoL ticket office, priced at £50. A small number of Golden Circle tickets priced at £60 are also available These tickets are for STANDING/UNRESERVED, which allows access to the pitch and the unreserved seats in Tier 1 of the stadium only or the Golden Circle.

The maximum number of tickets per person is EIGHT and a booking fee of £4.75 per ticket will be charged on ALL credit/debit card transactions. There is NO booking fee for cash sales.

Purchasers will be issued with a voucher NOT a ticket. This voucher can be redeemed for an actual concert ticket nearer the time of the show.

Important information – age restrictions:
No persons under 14 years of age are permitted on the pitch area.  Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18e. Children aged five or under must purchase a reserved seat.
