Pupils supporting Niall's Mile

Local kids back charity walk.

Hundreds of school children walked a mile route around their school to raise awareness of the benefits of light exercise and funds for the Foundation of Light.

Pupils at East Herrington Primary School last week took part in a special Niall's Mile accompanied by SAFC mascot Samson.

Up to 500 pupils walked a mile route around their school to raise awareness of the benefits of light exercise and funds for the Foundation of Light.

Named after Black Cats legend and former chairman Niall Quinn, Niall's Mile has been organised by the Foundation of Light in partnership with Sunderland NHS Teaching Primary Care Trust.

The initiative is now in its fourth year and comprises of a series of walks across Sunderland.

Pupils were encouraged to wear Sunderland AFC colours and pledge £1 to the registered charity of SAFC, the Foundation of Light. In return youngsters received a special Niall's Mile bracelet.

Speaking about the walk, Jill McVeigh, Assistant Head of Lifelong Learning at the Foundation of Light commented "it was great to see the children and teachers of East Herrington Primary School in their colours and getting well into the spirit of Niall's Mile.

"The campaign is all about getting people participating in fun, physical activities that cumulatively can make a big difference to their overall health.

"The youngsters certainly seemed to have a lot of fun and there were plenty of smiles on display on this walk."
