Riders conquer Dublin to Sunderland challenge.

A group of intrepid cyclists has raised £40,000 for a North East charity after pedalling 380 miles across the UK and Ireland.

The 30 cyclists, of all ages and abilities, travelled from the Carlton Hotel at Blanchardstown, Dublin and were joined by a further six riders on the Scottish leg and ‘Final Fifty’ to complete the journey to the Stadium of Light, Sunderland, raising money for SAFC’s official charity The Foundation of Light.

Led by Foundation of Light Development Director, Ken Teears and Gavin Slark, Group Chief Executive of Ireland-based DIY retailer and builder’s merchants Grafton Group plc, which was principal sponsor of the event, the group travelled 380 miles across Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England in just five days.

Proceeds from the event, which was also sponsored by Carlton Group, Cycle World (Sunderland), Dunelm Glass, Giant UK, Reds and in association with UKTI are now expected to total £40,000 – more than double that raised in the inaugural Dublin to Sunderland Challenge (D2S) in 2012.

All proceeds will go directly to the Foundation of Light, which helps more than 42,000 people every year through education, sports, health and community engagement programmes running across the North East.

Ken Teears, said: “The D2S challenge was extremely hard work but we were driven on by the support from other riders and the knowledge that it was all in aid of an excellent cause.

“It was an amazing and memorable experience for everyone who took part. I’d like to thank all of those who participated and sponsored this year’s event and we’re already looking forward to smashing the £40,000 fundraising total in 2014.”

The Foundation of Light is structurally and financially independent of Sunderland AFC and relies on fundraising for 90 per cent of its project costs.
