Special Foundation of Light event taking shape.

The Foundation of Light’s ‘Coaching the Coaches’ clinic has announced that behaviour specialist Ev Ripley-Day will be taking part in this year’s event which helps grassroots and professional coaches identify and manage challenging behaviour.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about some of the techniques that Ev has used over more than 25 years of working with challenging youngsters in the event at the Stadium of Light.

Ev currently oversees the Foundation of Light’s award-winning ‘Pitstop’ programme which addresses challenging behaviour in youngsters excluded, or on the verge of exclusion, from mainstream education.

Ev told safc.com she was delighted to be involved with the event and she hopes her expertise will benefit the coaches at the event.

“I’m very excited to be involved with the Coach the Coaches programme and I am proud to have been asked,” she explained.

“Managing behaviour is not necessarily about getting what you want out of training sessions, it’s also about helping your players get what they want and ensuring that can happen with the least amount of disruption.

“I look forward to taking the coaches in attendance through some of the most effective strategies and techniques I’ve developed over the last 29 years and answering questions about behaviour problems that they may have come across.”

The Foundation of Light’s Head of Football Development, Jamie Wright, told safc.com he was delighted to have Ev involved with the event.

“Within the Foundation of Light we have some very talented individuals with fantastic expertise in their fields,” Wright explained.

“After trialling a behaviour session with Ev my own team of coaches reported a reduction of challenging behaviour displayed by groups they worked with - this allowed them to be more effective in their coaching and get more out of their players, who subsequently enjoyed the sessions more.

“We’ve continued to work with Ev, refining her expertise in the sports hall or football field environment and the results have been so good we thought her an obvious candidate for the Coaching the Coaches workshops.”

Also joining Ev is Norma Ord, who teaches PE at Seaham School.

The Foundation of Light's Football Coaching Department offers player pathways from in-school coaching and after-school clubs, through to Elite clubs, development centres and Sunderland AFC's Academy.

The ‘Coaching the Coaches’ initiative aims to grant grassroots coaches access to some of the country’s top coaching talent to help them improve their players’ skills and enjoyment of football.

Places for the course, which takes place from 6-8pm on Friday 26th April, are available for just £5 and can be booked by contacting Rhys Atchison on 0191 551 5077 or email rhys.atchison@safc.com.
