Sunderland suffer defeat.Sunderland’s hopes of ending their 40 year run without silverware were blown to pieces as Championship team Bolton won 2-0 at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland started the game the better and in the first half had three good chances with no response from Wanderers, who were backed by around 300 fans from the North West.
Craig Gardner came close from a free kick from around 30 yards but his shot was watched all the way by Lonergan and well saved in the end. Johnson also had a free kick from around 5 yards closer in but his shot travelled just wide of the post.
Titus Bramble could have scored a rare goal for the Lads as his snap shot in the box flashed just past the post, maybe even scraping it on the way out. Warning signs were there as Spearing beat the offside trap to put Sordell in. His shot, though, was well saved by Mignolet.
Shortly after an hour of play, Darren Pratley was brought down by Colback in the box. Sordell, who had spurned his earlier opportunity, calmly took the penalty and scored, giving Mignolet no chance.
Larsson and Campbell then took the place of Wickham and Johnson but Sunderland, as in the previous game, fell two goals behind. Tyrone Mears managed to get into the box and his cross was never properly cleared and there was Sordell to volley home a shot that deflected off Mignolet on its way into the back of the net.
