Scotsman John Edward Doig grew up as a winger before signing for Arbroath as a goalkeeper in 1885.
Moving to Sunderland in 1890, Doig became an ever-present in the 14 seasons he spent on Wearside where he picked up four championship medals.
He formed part of the 'Team of All the Talents' and still holds a club record of seven consecutive clean sheets.
