Still has places available in three of the regions biggest running events.

A North East charity is giving runners from across the region a chance to take their marks for three of this year’s biggest events.

SAFC’s official charity, the Foundation of Light, still has places available for the Great North Run in September, the Sunderland City half marathon and the Sunderland City 10k in May, as well as the Lambton 10k and 3k run in June.

The Great North Run, which covers 13 miles from Newcastle to South Shields, is one of the most iconic half marathons in the world, with around 56,000 people expected to take part in 2014.

The Foundation of Light has a limited number of places available for the event on September 7, with each runner receiving a charity running vest, a fundraising pack, training tips, membership to the Friends of the Foundation initiative and a complimentary pair of tickets to a SAFC home game.

The charity, which hosts a series of challenges throughout the year, is also now accepting entries for its annual Lambton 10k and 3k run.

The run, which returns on Sunday June 29, is one of the most unique events in the running calendar and is set in the Lambton Estate, where BBC drama The Paradise is filmed.

The 10k route is designed for both competitive and non-competitive runners, while the 3k route is ideal for young children and families.

Finally, places are available on one of the fastest growing running events in the North East; the Sunderland City half marathon and the Sunderland City 10k taking part on May 4.

Proceeds raised from all runs will be used to help fund the Foundation of Light’s wide range of sport and education-based programmes, which benefit more than 42,000 young people and families across the North East every year.

Jemma Garrett, Events Coordinator at the Foundation of Light, said: “The Foundation of Light relies on fundraising for 90 per cent of its project costs.

“The Great North Run, Sunderland City runs and Lambton 10k and 3k are a great way for people to help us support young people and families across the North East and offer entrants the chance to take on a personal challenge at the same time.”

Places for the Great North Run are available from the Foundation of Light with a £50 deposit and a fundraising pledge of £250.   Entry for the Lambton Runs is charged at £12 for the 10k and £6 for the 3k. Charitable places are available for the Sunderland City runs for a £25.00 deposit per person for the 10k and £32.00 per person for the Half Marathon, plus a fundraising pledge of £50.00.
