A Foundation of Light coach has been hard at work in the Far East as part of an international development scheme.

Steven Jackson, a coach from Sunderland AFC’s official charity, has been delivering coaching sessions to over 40 primary and secondary school teachers in Hangzhou, China as part of the Barclays Premier League’s Premier Skills initiative.

Steven, who has been working alongside coaches from other Barclays Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, has been running classroom workshops and practical coaching sessions throughout the week.

The workshops and coaching sessions have included lessons about the importance of basic warm up activities and structuring a coaching session, with participants being given the chance to voice their opinion on what makes a good coach and how they could implement that into their own coaching sessions.

Steven said: “Premier Skills is a fantastic project and I have been really impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of the coaches. Throughout the week I have been teaching the coaches about different styles of coaching and how football can be used as a community development tool.”

Sunderland AFC has a strong connection with the Asian continent, following a number of activities in recent years including pre-season trips to South Korea and taking part in the prestigious Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong last year.

Graham Robinson, Head of International Football Development at SAFC, said: “We’re privileged to represent the Barclays Premier League in China, through the work of Steven and Premier Skills.

“As a club we are determined to help further enhance grassroots football worldwide and are firm believers in investing in community and education programmes.”

Premier Skills is a collaborative project between the Barclays Premier League and the British Council. It helps the development of community coaches and referees all over the world along with the production of learning materials to enhance people’s English language skills.
