Business leaders homeless for charity

Initiative to raise awareness.

Business leaders from across the North East are joining forces to raise money and awareness of homelessness.

Taking place at the Stadium of Light on Thursday 9 October, the executives will raise sponsor funds to sleep outdoors for one night – pitchside.

The aim of the CEO Sleepout is to firstly make a tangible difference to individuals who face homelessness across the City by raising awareness of their circumstances and secondly by providing financial support to charities that address the hidden issues of homelessness by supporting those most at risk.

The event also coincides with the Sunderland Echo Business Portfolio Awards on the same night.  The aim is that those attending the annual awards ceremony will then give something back by swapping their tuxedos for a sleeping bag and participate in the sleepout.

Giving up a night of comfort, regardless of the weather the evening will raise funds for the Foundation of Light, Homeless FA, CEO Sleepout UK and other homeless charities.

A few of the business leaders taking part so far are; Andy Preston, Chairman of CEO Sleepout UK, Bob Paton Managing Director at Accenture, Andrew Chambers, Managing Director at ARC Wealth Limited and Phil King, Head of Commercial at the Foundation of Light.

Andy Preston, Chairman at CEO Sleepout UK said:  “We run these events at various locations throughout the UK to raise awareness of homelessness and issues people face.  If we can raise thousands for a few different charities and highlight the important issues around homelessness by sleeping out for one night then so be it.”

Armed with only sleeping bags and several layers of clothing, the business leaders will only have access to toilets and hot drinks.

Bob Paton, Managing Director at Accenture and Chair of the organising committee for the event commented:  “It’s something people take for granted and have a stigma attached to homeless people.  I am very keen to participate and encourage all business leaders to support the cause.”

Phil King, Head of Commercial at the Foundation of Light continued to add: “We have run a ‘Homeless FA Training Centre’ for two years now at the Foundation, with over 60 homeless male and females and I have seen firsthand the impact that this project has had.  The funds raised through this unique initiative will go towards helping to deliver projects like this”
