Foundation backing FA initiative.

The Foundation of Light, in partnership with the Durham County Football Association, are asking adults to get involved in football and enjoy the FA’s Mars Just Play! initiative.

The FA’s Mars Just Play! programme was introduced in June 2011 and aims to increase the number of adults aged over 16 playing football.

Sessions run at the Foundation of Light’s outreach site at the Seaburn Centre in Sunderland for two hours every Friday.

‘Just Play’ provides a fun, flexible casual game and is inclusive to all adults no matter what their fitness level or ability. The kickabouts are adapted to age and capability ensuring there is something for everyone who takes part

Ian Corner, Foundation of Light’s Kicks North Manager said: We usually work with children and teenagers delivering a range of activities and sport programmes at the Seaburn Centre, but the FA’s ‘Just Play’ programme has opened a new door allowing us to work with adults and help keep them interested in football.  The sessions are very informal and flexible but you can see the sense of enjoyment when they play.’

Chris Hutchinson, Durham County FA’s Mars Just Play! Football Officer commented: Mars Just Play! has become more popular over the past few years as the initiative has introduced new and past players back into the game. Furthermore, the sessions are really informal and focus on a fun way of enjoying football without the commitment of an eight month long football season and that’s why we believe it is so popular now.

The Foundation of Light have been delivering the session for three months and have worked with 77 adults so far.

The Premier League’s Kicks and Mini Kickers programme also run from the Seaburn Centre two evenings per week delivering a variety of sports, arts and crafts to children and teenagers from the age of 8-19 years.
