Local people honoured at special event.

More than 500 families from Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham came to the Stadium of Light this week to take part in the Sir Bob Murray Family Graduations.

The families had all taken part in the Foundation of Light’s Family Learning through Football programme and attended the special graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievements.

Sunderland AFC legend and Foundation of Light Ambassador Marco Gabbiadini gave a congratulatory speech and met those in attendance.

Run by the Foundation of Light, the registered charity of Sunderland AFC, Family Learning through Football is an award winning 10 week programme run in primary schools which uses the power of football to engage families in activities that inspire learning and achievement, develop and build new skills, and improve relationships within the family.

Michael Colclough, Assistant Head of Lifelong Learning commented:

“I’d like to offer our congratulations to ever child, parent and grandparent who attended today. It’s truly heart warming to see so many happy faces celebrating their achievements together.

“On behalf of the Foundation of Light I’d also like to thank Sir Bob Murray who kindly sponsors this event, and Marco Gabbiadini who spoke at the ceremony and met those graduating today.”

Kelly Ferguson from Silksworth, who graduated with her son Nathan added:

“We’ve had a fantastic time on the Foundation’s Family Learning course and today’s been the icing on the cake really. It’s great to be able to come to the Stadium of Light and have such a nice day out together all because of the Foundation of Light.”

In 2013 the programme worked with 2,000 families across the region.

The event is sponsored by Sir Bob Murray CBE, former Chairman of SAFC and Founder of the Foundation of Light.

The Family Learning portfolio of programmes is funded: in Sunderland by Sunderland City Council FACL; in South Tyneside by South Tyneside Council ACL; and in County Durham by Durham City Council Adult Learning and Skills, Caterpillar, Cestria Community Housing, Derwentside Homes, livin and Northumbrian Water.
