Adults graduate and are helped to get ‘Back in the Game’.

Course participants who took part in the Foundation of Light’s ‘Back in the Game’ programme were in safe hands with Jimmy Montgomery this week, as he handed out certificates and congratulated learners at the Stadium of Light.

The employability course which has so far helped 44% of participants into work and is recruiting for September courses in Sunderland, South Tyneside, Easington, Shildon, Derwentside and Chester-le-Street.

‘Back in the Game’ is a 10 week employability programme, (three days a week) which takes a holistic approach to course participants helping them gain long-term work. Participants undertake a variety of exercises designed to develop their skills, attitude and physical fitness recognising that an overall change of lifestyle is often needed for people to remain in work.

Participants on the programme, are referred by Job Centre Plus to Foundation staff who then review their suitability for the programme at least one week prior to the course commencing.

The programme offers participants a two-week work placement and the chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications in Workskills (level 1), Functional Skills in Maths and English (up to level 2 depending upon individual ability), and a Heart Start Emergency first aid qualification.

The course consists of a mixture of classroom, practical and physical activities specially designed to enable participants to develop their skills and become more employable.

Course participants practice interviews techniques and also have opportunities to take part in further courses.

Workforce Development Manager, Dave Jeffries commented: “We give all learners the tools in order to help themselves seek work, as well as support and guidance throughout the course which helps them gain employment or move into training.  Many gain qualifications and vital experience which they never had or never thought they would get the chance to do.  ‘Back in the Game’ has grown over the past few years and has gained a great reputation of helping unemployed adults back into work or training.

Launched in Sunderland in 2009, the Back in Game programme has worked with over 500 adults across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham with over 44% gaining employment. Almost 90% of participants improved their motivation to find work and improve their lives.
