Places up for grabs for annual event.

With only weeks until this year’s BUPA Great North Run, Foundation of Light are appealing to runners to help those in need across the north east through their £10k event fundraising drive.

One of the region’s greatest sporting events, the Bupa Great North Run will take place on Sunday 7 September, with around 56,000 professional and amateur runners expected to embark on the famous Newcastle to South Shields route.

With a team of more than 30 runners expected to raise £300 each, Foundation of Light are appealing to runners who currently don’t have a charity benefactor to sign up to their fundraising bid as they attempt to raise £10k for programmes changing lives across the North East.

Jemma Garrett, Foundation of Light events coordinator said, “We’ve had a great response already from those wanting to take a charity space and help our work across the region, with our biggest team of fundraisers ever taking part this year. However, we’re still a little short of our £10k target and would love to hear from independent runners who would like to make a real difference to lives across our great region whilst taking part in this iconic event.”

Foundation of Light is the registered charity of Sunderland AFC and is financially independent of the football club, needing to raise over £3m every year to deliver award-winning sporting, education and community programmes working with disabled youngsters, families and disenfranchised teenagers amongst others.

The national award-winning charity is also appealing to those wanting to secure their place for next year’s run, with guaranteed places available for a deposit of just £50.

Jemma added, “At this time of year a lot of people see the build-up, watch the event itself and think ‘I wish I was part of that’. For a small deposit we’re giving these people the chance to make sure that next year they will be with a guaranteed place in the starting line-up.”

“It’s never too early to start preparing for an event like the Great North Run and this is a fantastic opportunity to ensure that you don’t miss out next year too.”
