15 local families learn key first aid skills.

Fifteen local families completed a Family Heart Start First Aid course over the summer holidays at the Foundation of Light’s base in Shildon.

The families took part in fun tasks and activities where they learnt about first aid and the steps to take if you came across a casualty.

The learners practised putting their family members into the recovery position and acted out different emergency scenarios that could occur as well as taking part in group discussions.

The groups also used first aid manikins to practise Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.

Families attending the course had previously taken part in a Fun Day organised by housing provider ‘Livin’ and the Foundation of Light.

The Foundation’s centre in Shildon was launched earlier this year in partnership with Livin, expanding the Foundation of Light’s reach into County Durham.

Peter Allen, Sedgefield Area Manager, commented: “The Family Heart Start First Aid course gave us an opportunity to help families come together to learn practical and useful skills that they can use in their everyday lives to help keep each other safe and well.

“As the Foundation's centre in Shildon becomes more established we hope to be able to expand our services to further meet the needs of the local community.”

The charity currently delivers the award-winning Family Learning through Football programme and are about to begin delivery of their first Back in the Game Employability Programme from the centre with further programmes planned.
