Back in the game now recruiting

Successful course now open for applications.

An employability course which has so far helped 41% of participants into work is recruiting for October courses in Sunderland and South Tyneside.

The ‘Back in the Game’ programme, run by the Foundation of Light, commences 15th October for South Tyneside and 16th October for Sunderland.

‘Back in the Game’ is a 10 week employability programme (three days a week) which takes a holistic approach to course participants helping them gain long-term work. Participants undertake a variety of exercises designed to develop their skills, attitude and physical fitness recognising that an overall change of lifestyle is often needed for people to remain in work.

Participants on the programme, are referred by Job Centre Plus to Foundation staff who then review their suitability for the programme at least one week prior to the course commencing.

The programme offers participants a two-week work placement and the chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications in Workskills (level 1), Functional Skills in Maths and English (up to level 2 depending upon individual ability), and a Heart Start Emergency first aid qualification.

Course participants have guaranteed interviews with Spark Response and also opportunities to take part in further courses such as Manual Handling and First Aid.

Both courses will take place at the Stadium of Light, funded by South Tyneside Family Adult Community Learning, ISOS Housing and Expedient Training for the Sunderland programme.

Back in the Game Coordinator Dave Jeffries commented: “the Back in the Game programme is focused on helping people as individuals, addressing their specific challenges and moving them closer to their goals and aspirations. I think our record of getting people into work is huge testament to how well this works and we’re excited about the courses starting in October.”

Launched in Sunderland in 2009, the Back in Game programme has worked with almost 400 adults across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham with over 41% gaining employment. Almost 90% of participants improved their motivation to find work and improve their lives.
