UK Asbestos Specialists support young people

by Foundation of Light

Donation helps youngsters learn through football.

UK Asbestos Specialists Ltd (UKasl) has helped over 400 young people gain access to sport and learning new skills in the region in partnership with Foundation of Light, the registered charity of Sunderland AFC.

A £5,000 donation has funded two programmes - ‘Learning through Football’ and the Making Moves disability programme -  with a specific focus on South Tyneside, where the asbestos specialists are based. The organisation has also made a long-term commitment to the Foundation by signing up to its’ Corporate Membership scheme for the next five years.

‘Learning through Football’ provides the opportunity for all Primary Schools in Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham to visit the Stadium of Light and take part in a range of educational opportunities and activities within the Centre of Light classrooms. The programme is a day’s activities for a class of pupils to study in a Literacy, Numeracy or Health Education subject, all mapped to the National Curriculum.

The ‘Making Moves’ programme provides disabled young people and adults in Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham with the opportunity to access high quality sports and educational programmes.

Speaking about the donation, Ken Teears Development Director at the Foundation of Light, said “UK Asbestos Specialists Ltd are a fantastic new donor to the Foundation. They have been clear about how they want to help local communities, specifically those in South Tyneside where they are based. The programmes they selected have provided Primary School children and disabled young people with exciting learning opportunities, which they would not have been able to access otherwise.

“On behalf of the Foundation, we would like to thank them for their long-term commitment to the charity and we hope to further develop this exciting relationship for the benefit of local children, young people and families.”

Les Cooper, Company Director, UKasl commented: “We were only too happy to support the Foundation with our long term commitment to funding and are delighted to see the results of it benefitting schools throughout our area. After listening to Niall  Quinn speak so passionately about the Foundation a couple of years ago we decided to visit the offices and were blown away by the fantastic facilities, dedication and hard work by all of the staff. We will continue to support the Foundation and hope it grows from strength to strength in the future and continues to provide fantastic support to communities’ within our region”.
