Girls' side takes netball title.
A team of girls representing Sunderland AFC and the Foundation of Light have been victorious in a national netball tournament.
Two teams of girls taking part in the Foundation of Light’s ‘Premier League 4 Sport’ programme were invited to the National PL4S Netball Tournament in London to compete against teams from Arsenal, Hull, Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion.
Both SAFC teams reached the finals in their respective age groups.
The Year 10/11 combined team won their final with the Year 8/9 combined team narrowly missing out on making it a double of victories being beaten 3-2 by West Brom in their final.
Kevin Darke, Foundation of Light Premier League 4 Sport coordinator commented:“We’re delighted with the girls’ performance but what’s more important is that we were able to help the youngsters take part in a sporting experience that they’ll remember for a long time. The tournament was a great success with all of the youngsters taking part taking something from it.”
Speaking about the Premier League 4 Sport programme, which aims to drive participation in sports other than football Kevin commented: “Premier League 4 Sport is a vital programme as not everyone is interested in football – the region’s most accessible sport by far.
"Through this programme we aim to give youngsters the opportunity to find a sport that they enjoy so that they can enjoy the physical, social and emotional benefits that sport can bring.”
Premier League 4 Sport currently offers introductions to Netball, Judo, Table Tennis and Volleyball through satellite clubs across the North East.
The programme is funded by the Premier League Community Fund.
