'Foundations' project launched at former housing office.

A former housing office reopened its doors this month to launch a new project set up to help improve lives and the community.

The Foundations project led by homes and communities organisation ‘Livin’ in partnership with Sunderland AFC’s charity the Foundation of Light, is based in the newly renovated Foundations Centre in Church Street, Shildon.

The building has undergone a major transformation and now boasts a range of facilities including a fully equipped ICT suite, flexible meeting rooms, kitchen, secure outdoor are and office space.

The project works together with other partnerships and community organisations and will help people to learn new skills and improve their lifestyles by offering training and support with employment, health and wellbeing, money management and more.

The work which has taken four months to complete was carried out by repairs and maintenance partner Mears and made possible with donations from six North East businesses.

A team from The Foundation of Light, will also be based in the building whilst delivering the innovative Family Learning programme in partnership with livin which gives parents/carers and their children the opportunity to learn together and improve their own skills.

Alan Boddy, Livin’s executive director for people and communities, said: “Already the project is making a difference and the centre has a real buzz about it.

“We know there are significant health and unemployment issues in Shildon - 13 per cent of households in the area are unable to work due to sickness and disability.

“The Foundations project and the new facility will complement existing projects and support people to learn new skills, improve their chances of finding work and ultimately improve lifestyles.

“We are speaking to community groups, training providers and organisations to ensure the new facility is accessible to as many people as possible.”

Lesley Spuhler, Chief Executive of the Foundation of Light, said: “I am delighted to see the incredible transformation from the former housing office into such a welcoming learning space that I am sure will be used by many local people. The Foundation of Light is excited about the work the team will be able to do by being based in the local community, in the heart of Shildon, and thank Livin for choosing us a primary delivery partner.”
