Next month will see the return of community walking event ‘Niall’s Mile’ across Sunderland schools.
‘Niall’s Mile’ is a series of mile long walks and sporting festivals designed to get children and adults involved in regular, moderate physical activity that will have a long term benefit to their health.
Now in its fifth year, ‘Niall’s Mile’ has been organised by the Foundation of Light in partnership with Sunderland City Council.
The event is named after former Sunderland AFC Chairman and former Foundation of Light Trustee Niall Quinn.
Children will be encouraged to pledge £1 to the Foundation of Light, the registered charity of Sunderland AFC, for taking part in the events at their school and will receive a Niall’s Mile bag upon completion of their event.
Financially and structurally independent of the football club, the Foundation of Light relies on fundraising for 90% of project costs and last year worked with more than 200 schools across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham delivering sports and education programmes.
Schools wishing to take part should contact the Foundation of Light on 0191 551 5191 for further information.
Lesley Spuhler, Chief Executive of the Foundation of Light, said: “I would like to thank Sunderland City Council for their continued support of this event which helps keep sport and active lifestyles firmly on the agenda for schools.”
Nonnie Crawford, Director of Public Health, Sunderland City Council added: “We are very pleased to be able to support Niall’s Mile which promotes the Change4Life Campaign messages encouraging people to eat well, move more and live longer. Making small lifestyle changes will have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of the people of Sunderland. Walking just one mile regularly is just one small change that many people across Sunderland can make and the Niall’s Mile campaign is a great way to highlight this.”
