Mears Group hosted in style.
The Foundation of Light organised and hosted a 5-a-side football tournament for Mears Group at Sunderland AFC’s Academy of Light recently to celebrate the housing repairs and maintenance provider’s 25th birthday.
17 teams took part from branches from across the north of Britain in a World Cup style tournament featuring round robin and knock out stages.
A corresponding South of Britain tournament will be hosted at Brighton and Hove Albion.
The tournament cup was won by Mears’ Glasgow 1 team who beat Wardley in a penalty shoot out after extra time failed to produce a winner.
Wardley’s keeper, Joe Perry, won the Player of the Tournament prize keeping a clean sheet throughout the tournament until the penalty shootout.
Mears Group are one of the Foundation of Light’s Corporate Members and have taken part in fundraising activities for the charity including a golf day earlier this year.
Phil King, Foundation of Light’s Head of Commercial commented of the tournament:
“It was great to be able to welcome Mears to the Academy of Light and to host a tournament of this size for their employees. As a charity we are quite unique in that our staff are experts at hosting and running sporting events for adults and children alike. When Mears called asking if we could run the tournament we leapt at the chance and we hope that everyone had a fantastic day.”
Colin Middlemass, Managing Director, Mears added: “Mears' 25 year celebrations went up a gear when we experienced Premier League facilities at SAFC. Staff are already asking for another tournament next year.”
Mears' relationship with the Foundation of Light is based on making a real difference to the communities we deliver services to. Thank you to the Club and the Foundation of Light for their hospitality and encouragement.”
A plate trophy ran for teams knocked out during the round robin stages giving teams the opportunity to play more games with the Glasgow 2 team taking this prize.
