Dedicated Foundation of Light matchday.
Sunderland AFC’s forthcoming Barclays Premier League game against Arsenal has been designated as ‘Foundation Day’ in recognition of the club’s registered charity, the Foundation of Light.
Taking place on Saturday 9 February, the aim of the day is to raise awareness and funds for the organisation, which worked with more than 40,000 children and adults last year.
Sunderland AFC’s players will warm up in special Foundation of Light t-shirts prior to the game and Martin O’Neill’s side will take to the field in one-off match shirts bearing the Foundation’s logo, which will then be individually signed and auctioned off after the game in aid of the charity.
A range of activities will take place throughout the day, both outside the Stadium prior to kick off and at half time on the pitch. There will also be opportunities for fans to win some fantastic prizes as well as learn more about the work of charity.
Established 11 years ago by former Sunderland AFC Chairman Sir Bob Murray CBE, the Foundation of Light is one of the biggest and most developed football foundations in the world. Structurally and financially independent from the football club, the Foundation relies on fundraising for 95% of project costs every year.
Speaking ahead of the event, Foundation of Light Chief Executive Lesley Spuhler said: “We’re very excited to be holding our ‘Foundation Day’ at the upcoming Arsenal fixture and are incredibly grateful for the support that everyone at Sunderland AFC has given us in order to make this happen.
“The primary objective of the day is to engage with more people, not just as fundraisers but as participants, partners and ambassadors. We support the local community, are here for that local community and are looking forward to working with even more people over the coming year.”
A ‘Community Fundraiser’ initiative will also be launched at the game aimed at helping community spirited individuals become involved in supporting positive change in the region.
The Foundation of Light’s Head of Commercial Phil King added: “We’ve worked hard to make it easy for people to become a part of who we are, what we do and to get involved. From 380 mile cycle challenges, one mile walks, football tournaments, to helping people organising their own events, the Foundation offers something for absolutely everyone.”
