Premier League School Sport a resounding success

More than 550 primary school children took part in sports festivals recently as part of the new Premier League School Sport programme ran by the Foundation of Light.

Youngsters aged 9-11 years from 12 Primary Schools across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham took part in three festivals as they concluded the six week programme which aims to drive inclusion in sport and healthy activity.

The programme also aims to develop teamwork and communication skills whilst improving physical coordination.

Coaches from the Foundation of Light, the registered charity of Sunderland AFC, have been delivering the six week programme, which is funded by the Premier League Community Fund, across the North East.

Ian Archbold, Foundation of Light Competition and Events Coordinator commented: “This is the first time we have run the Premier League School Sport programme and it has been a big hit with the schools and pupils who have taken part.

“The sessions offer activities that everyone can take part in and benefit from. They are engaging on so many levels that it doesn’t just develop physical literacy but also vital life skills such as effective communicating and team work which have real value in so many areas of life, not just sports.”

The Premier League School Sport programme is free to schools across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham.
