Report: Manchester United U18 v Sunderland U18

Manchester United U18s 1-1 Sunderland U18s

Sunderland under-18s suffered heartache as league-leaders Manchester United scored a last-gasp equaliser to steal a point at Carrington on Saturday in the U18 Premier League.

The young Black Cats raced into an early lead as Lee Connolly opened the scoring on 20 minutes.

Connelly broke through following a long clearance from keeper Michael Woud, persistence then paid off as a miss-understanding at the back allowed the Scotsman the chance to pounce and fire home.

Sunderland, who had beaten United in their last five meetings, continued to push forward and had chances to double their lead and put the game out of reach.

But the lads were made to rue their missed chances as they were cruelly denied all three points when United managed to breach Sunderland’s backline with an opportunistic goal in the 85th minute.

Speaking post-match Elliott Dickman said: "The lads did very well today, it was a well-deserved point but I thought we should have come away with all three points. Overall it was a good team performance."

Sunderland: Woud, Hickey (Howard 65), Taylor, Young, McAughtrie, Diamond (Krushnell 80), Allen (Fowler 75). Bale, Hackett, Kimpioka, Connolly.

Subs not used: Patterson, Best
