Sunderland v Arsenal WSL

Sunderland Ladies 0-4 Arsenal Ladies

Sunderland Ladies suffered a third defeat at the hands of Arsenal Ladies.

Sunderland Ladies had an almost perfect start as Beth Mead’s cross into the box very nearly reached Brooke Chaplen who was at full stretch.

With 12 minutes played a clumsy challenge in the box on Dan Carter saw the referee point to the penalty spot.

Rachael Laws made a fine save to deny Fara Williams from the spot but Victoria Losada reacted quickest to bury the rebound high into the net.

SAFC Ladies responded well with both Mead and Chaplen causing the Arsenal defence problems.

Mead tried to play in Chaplen with a long ball but the Sunderland forward was narrowly squeezed off the ball.

Moments later a long ball forward by Steph Bannon found Chaplen again in a dangerous position but the linesman raised his flag for a very close offside decision.

Arsenal doubled their lead as Nobbs combined with Danielle Van De Donk before beating Laws with a superb finish off the outside of her right foot.

Maddie Hill went inches wide but Sunderland were forced to go into the break trailing by two goals.

With just four minutes played of the second half, Dan Carter capitalised on poor defending in the Sunderland box and finished emphatically into Laws’ top left corner from Dominique Janssen's cross.

On 53 minutes Fara Williams buried her second penalty of the day after Danielle Brown caught Van De Donk.

Sunderland Ladies starting XI: Laws; Holmes, Williams, Sharp, Bannon ©, Brown; Staniforth (86 McDougall), Furness (58 Potts), Chaplen; Mead, Hill (58’ Roche)
