Aston Villa Ladies 0 Sunderland Ladies 3

Ladies maintain 100% start to new campaign.

Goals from Beth Mead and Abbey Joice gave SAFC Ladies a convincing win against Aston Villa and continued their unbeaten run in the FA Women's Super League.

Sunderland burst out of the blocks and within minutes Rachel Furness powered through the midfield and released Kiera Ramshaw with a perfectly timed pass, which the forward hit just wide of the far post.

The Black Cats didn't have to wait long for a goal, in the ninth minute Mead pounced on a defensive mix-up and broke free of the Villa defence to slot the ball home, giving the visitors an early lead.

Fifteen minutes into the game Victoria Greenwell caught the Villa defence napping with a long ball and Mead broke free only to see her shot hit the post.

Sunderland had the ball in the back of the net a minute later when Furness fired in from a Greenwell free kick but the referee blew for a foul on the goalkeeper.

As the game progressed Aston Villa managed to create chances for themselves, Steph Bannon found herself out muscled by Carly Davies who shot narrowly over in the 25th minute.

It was, however, the visitors, who furthered their lead. In the 39 minute another excellent cross from Greenwell found Mead once more, who this time slotted the ball past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the game.

Sunderland began the second half with the same high tempo that they began the game with.

Five minutes into the second half Joice ran at the defence before hitting a well-timed through ball for Mead, only for the Villa goalkeeper to deny the striker a hat-trick.

Moments later Villa forced Rachael Laws into a great save from close range with Gemma Wilson clearing the rebound off the line.

Aston Villa turned up the pressure on the Sunderland and had number chances to pull a goal back, the best of which was a diving header from Dani Petrovic at the back post.

Shortly after Laws was again forced into a great save from close range as Villa fought to get back into the game.

Sunderland's defence were made to work hard for a clean sheet as Villa forced Laws into another diving save which went beyond the Sunderland 'keeper but Greenwell somehow managed to hook the ball off the line.

With just two minutes left to play Joice wrapped up the win with an excellent strike from the edge of the area to give the Lady Black Cats their third win in three games.
