Cats take point away from St Mary's.

A late equaliser for Southampton cancelled out Emanuele Giaccherini’s first goal for Sunderland, as the Black Cats drew 1-1 on the South coast.

Giaccherini fired Paolo Di Canio’s men into an early lead after just two minutes when he was unmarked in the box to head home from a corner.

The game saw both sides create numerous chances in the second half, with the home side equalising in the dying minutes through Jose Fonte, sharing the points at St Mary’s.

Paolo Di Canio made two changes to his starting line-up from last week’s opener against Fulham, with Craig Gardner returning to centre midfield following suspension, and Modibo Diakite replacing Valentin Roberge alongside John O’Shea in defence.

The Black Cats started brightly and opened the scoring after just two minutes thanks to Emanuele Giaccherini. The Italian was unmarked in the box and fired home a header from six yards from Larsson’s corner to give Sunderland an early lead.

The home side pushed for a quick equaliser with Rickie Lambert having a goal ruled out for offside, before a Jay Rodriguez header on 18 minutes called Keiren Westwood into action.

The Irish international dived to his bottom right corner to keep his side in front before collecting the rebound.

Both sides started the second half well after making changes. Di Canio replaced Sessegnon at the break with Ji Dong-won, whilst Southampton introduced new boy Daniel Osvaldo and Nathaniel Clyne.

Ji almost made an immediate impact, hitting a volley inside the box from a long range Johnson pass, but it was comfortably saved by Artur Boruc in the Southampton goal.

At the other end Adam Lallana showed pace to burst into the Sunderland box but a sliding tackle from Diakite, brilliantly blocked the effort on goal.

After 53 minutes Di Canio made his second change of the game with David Vaughan replacing Jack Colback. Onrej Celustka switched to left-back in place of Colback with Gardner moving to right-back, allowed Vaughan to play in the middle of the park alongside Larsson.

Jozy Altidore then forced a save from Boruc on the hour mark with the keeper dashing off his line to block the American’s shot on goal after Ji threaded a through ball on the left hand side of the box.

The Saints continued to fight back through Lambert, whose long range effort from 25-yards had Westwood at full stretch to palm away the powerful strike.

Sunderland made their final change of the game with Connor Wickham replacing goal scorer Giaccherini for the final 10 minutes of the game.

In the 87 minute the home side leveled the scores through Jose Fonte. The defender latched onto a long range free kick to head an equaliser for The Saints.

Almost 2,000 fans made the trip to Southampton which saw Sunderland earn their first point of the season.
