Hoops frustrate Cats.
Sunderland were left frustrated after not getting a win against the Premier League basement side, and could be without their captain for two months.
Cattermole went into a tackle with Samba Diakite, also known for tough tacking, but came off the worse as he hurt his knee in the process of winning the ball back. He was replaced by Jack Colback only a few minutes in.
QPR threatened the Sunderland goal on four occasions. Ex Sunderland target man Djibril Cisse came close twice, grazing the bar on one occasion and forcing a save out of Mignolet by producing an in swinging shot. Jamie Mackie was then sent through on goal. The Scotsman’s toe poked effort was not enough to beat Mignolet as the big Belgian spread himself well. Adel Taarabt then saw his rebound shot blocked off the line by the valiant Sunderland defense.
Sunderland did have one chance though. After some smart play, Steven Fletcher was sent through on goal but his shot was from a tight angle. It was powerful though and it took a good save by the experienced Julio Cesar to keep it out.
It was Cesar, who hadn’t been taken goal kicks so far, that was subbed off at half time, replaced by Rob Green. He made a good save to block Fletcher in the only SAFC chance of the half. Fletcher’s bullet header from a corner looked to have been going in, but a last gasp saved from Green prevented that.
The game against a resurgent Norwich on Sunday evening will be a big and very important test for the Black Cats.
